Even more prolonged and sophisticated than expected, the ensuing 12 volumes of the History of Middle-earth, under Christopher’s editorship, proved to be a profitable enterprise. He soon grew to become one of many founder members of a free grouping of Oxford pals (on no account all at the University) with similar pursuits, often known as “The Inklings”.
